Когда Антонио был студентом архитектурного семинара Барселонского университета, его руководитель не мог решить, с кем он имеет дело — с гением или сумасшедшим.
Темой учебного проекта Гауди выбрал ворота кладбища, и это были ворота крепости — они разделяли мёртвых и живых, однако свидетельствовали, что вечный покой — всего лишь награда за достойную жизнь. У Гауди были разные глаза: один — близорукий, другой — дальнозоркий, но он не любил очки и говорил: «Греки очков не носили».
«Это безумие — пытаться изобразить несуществующий объект», — писал он в своём юношеском дневнике. Он ненавидел замкнутые и геометрически правильные пространства, а стены доводили его прямо-таки до сумасшествия; избегал прямых линий, считая, что прямая линия — это порождение человека, а круг — порождение Бога.

Чтобы не «резать» помещение на части, он придумал собственную безопорную систему перекрытий. Только через 100 лет появилась компьютерная программа, способная выполнить подобные расчёты. Это программа НАСА, рассчитывающая траектории космических полётов.
Образцом совершенства он считал куриное яйцо и в знак уверенности в его феноменальной природной прочности одно время носил сырые яйца, которые брал с собой для завтрака, прямо в кармане. Друзья отмечали его совершенно фантастическую ловкость, как, например, умение ловить мух на лету левой рукой.
Гауди был художником-мастеровым в высшем смысле этого слова. Он проектировал не только здания, но и удивительную мебель, причудливые решётки оград, ворот и перил. Своё поразительное умение мыслить и чувствовать в трёх измерениях объяснял наследственностью: отец и дед — кузнецы, один дед матери — бондарь, другой моряк — «люди пространства и расположения».
Его отец был медником, и этот факт, несомненно, оказал влияние на пристрастие Гауди к художественному литью. Многие поразительнейшие творения Гауди сделаны из кованого железа, зачастую его собственными руками.
В молодости архитектор был рьяным антиклерикалом, однако затем стал убеждённым католиком.
